On October 11, 2019, Ewald “Carl” Horst, passed away. He was the loving husband of Patricia Horst (nee Clary); caring father to Scott C. Horst and his wife Lynn, Kurt R. Horst and his wife Jessica; cherished grandfather to Haley, Malia, and Ronan; the loving brother of the late Francis Schruefer; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Having grown up in Southeast Baltimore near Edison Highway and a stone's throw from the Main Line Pennsylvania Railroad, he gravitated to model railroading in his younger years. His expertise in radio communications eventually led him to the hobby of radio controlled model airplanes. Carl was a member of the Southwest Area Park (SWAP) Modelers in Baltimore Highlands. Health permitting, he was found flying one of his many RC models on weekends, including a Red Baron style Fokker DR-1 triplane. He and his wife also enjoyed exercise at the St. Agnes Fitness Center three days a week.
Carl was a member of Second Lutheran Church for 57 years, and then joined Salem Lutheran Church. Born and raised in Baltimore, he settled permanently after being drafted in the Army Signal Corps in 1956 where he served for 6 years. He spent his career in telecommunications with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, now Verizon, retiring after 40 years. He and his wife Patricia lived in Catonsville. Carl was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc. 4107 Wilkens Ave. Baltimore, MD 21229 on Tuesday October 15th from 2-4pm & 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday October 16th at 11am also at Hubbard. Interment will immediately follow the service at Loudon Park Cemetery.
