Walter D. Smith Sr, at the age of 94 of Lansdowne, passed away comfortably in his sleep surrounded by his family on November 11, 2022. He is survived by his beloved wife Betty R. Smith and children Eileen May, Cindy Bridges, and Robert Smith – 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and niece and nephews.

Walter's love of life was his wife and family! He would tell everyone family first! One of his passions was traveling … from driving across the USA to flying to Europe and Hawaii. He loved New Orleans jazz music and never passed up on the pastries! He would tell everyone there are so many great sites to see in the world. Walter & Betty spent time with the grandchildren taking them on trips and traveling to Florida to visit their daughter, her husband and grandson. He loved to joke and tease with everyone.

Walter loved to share stories of growing up … seeing the Hindenburg with his father – watching Man o' War racing with his father - hitchhiking to Rock Hall with his friend Bud – all the different colleges he attended. And reminiscing over all the Ocean City trips he made with his family and traveling to see the change in the leaves during the fall months. During the summer months there were many weekends of cookouts, pool parties and horseshoe championships!

Walter was very proud of the fact he designed and drafted the blueprint for his home… of which 3 other families used the same blueprint for their home in Lansdowne. He loved living in Lansdowne and working at the Lansdowne Building and Loan on Monday nights hoping to help other families. One loan he was extremely proud of was a loan to Gerry and Mike to start G&M Restaurant.

Walter also did income taxes from home in the evening to help local families. He was always willing to help anyone if he could.

Walter worked at various places during his life, but had an opportunity to work at the Western Maryland Railroad which merged numerous times and became CSX. It was during this time Walter found his love, Betty. They were married November 13, 1954 and the rest is history. Walter passed away two days short of their 68th anniversary… and 24 days short of his 95th birthday.

He will be sadly missed but never forgotten -
