Obituary

On October 22, 2017, James Patsy Foti passed away. He was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Foti, parents, Julia (nee Mellicant) and Patsy Foti, brother Pasquale Pat Foti and many other beloved friends, who left this world far too soon. He is survived by his son Jim Foti and his daughter-in-law Molly McKenna and grandson Alex Foti, his sister Sara (nee Foti) Boytim and her husband Andrew Boytim, nieces Julie (nee Boytim) Hoogasian, Barbara (nee Boytim) Payne and Kathleen (nee Boytim) Ortiz, and their families, his brother David Foti, and Priss Foti the mother of Jim and the late Melissa. Jim was born and grew up in Greensburg, PA. As a young man, he was an accomplished paperboy and worked in the family grocery store, Fotis Grocery--a staple for more than 50 years on the first floor of their home on West Otterman Street. After he began teaching in the U.S. Naval Academys Mathematics Department, he and his family lived for many years in Cape St. Claire, near Annapolis. He was a very loving dad to Jimmy and Melissa. Active in the Garden Club, Jaycees, and Parish Council, Jim also volunteered as an EMT for the Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Department. Jim later lived in Baltimore and Millersville, before spending the past several years in the Charlestown community in Catonsville. Late in life he was extremely proud to become Grandpap to Alex, who enjoyed his visits and also looked forward to playing putt-putt and walking Grandpaps dog, Stella. Jim had a green thumb, and was passionate about his gardening for many, many years. He enjoyed dancing and other activities with friends in various groups in Baltimore and D.C. An astronomy buff, he built his own telescope during graduate school. Carrying on family traditions of Italian cooking, he especially enjoyed making and sharing pizzelles during the holidays. Always the wise guy, he was never short on puns, and the laughter that he brought to many friends and family will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, young man. Jim is a graduate of both Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA (1965) and the University of Maryland (1974), Ph.D. in Mathematics Jim taught in the Mathematics Department at the U.S. Naval Academy until 1977, before becoming a computer scientist for the Electromagnetic Compatibility and Analysis Center (ECAC) and IIT Research Institute (IITRI) in Annapolis, and another local IT consulting firm before retiring in 2004. Services for Jim will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, Maryland 21228.
