Gerald J. Smith


On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Gerald J. Smith, a long-time resident of Lansdowne, Maryland, Ocean Pines, Maryland and Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland, passed away. Son of the late Margaret Mary (Gannon) Smith and Albert Edward Smith, brother of Brendan, Francis, and Margaret Smith (Prescott), he was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 13, 1929. Gerald married Marian Celeste Mitchell (1934-2009) on March 30, 1964. Survivors include brother Brendan and his wife Nan of Kent Island, daughter Julia Lagarde and her husband David of Frederick, son Joseph Smith and his wife Valerie of Pasadena; son Jerry Smith and his wife Brooke of Cedarcroft, and beloved grandchildren Daniel Barrick and his wife Lisa, Colleen Barrick, Eric Smith, Lauren Smith, Gannon Smith, and Astrid Smith; and beloved great-grandchildren Reed and Cecilia Barrick; and many close nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Gerald was an adoring husband, father, and grandfather. He was a school teacher of social studies at Lansdowne Middle School, Arbutus and Pikesville junior high schools, and also taught at the Maryland School for the Blind.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the Lady Chapel at The Cathedral of Mary our Queen, 5200 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21210. Donations may be made in his memory to the Joseph House, 812 Boundary Street, Salisbury, Maryland 21801.
