Tribute
David Tighe Whitaker of Catonsville MD passed away unexpectedly on October 13, 2020 at his home of a
heart attack.  Born in Chattanooga TN, David grew up in Maryland and was a graduate of Northwestern
High School and earned both a BA and Masters at the University of Maryland.  He had a long and
distinguished career as a planner for Frederick County and the Maryland Department of
Transportation.
He was an excellent musician, master of the dobro, who played with numerous bluegrass groups over
the years.  He was also an avid bicyclist who was a member of the Potomac Pedalers and the advocacy
group Bike Maryland.  David had a passion for history, especially the civil war, and would sometimes
combine that with his love of cycling by leading historical bike tours of battlefields.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kim Lamphier, who passed away in 2019 after a year long battle
with cancer. His first wife, Mary Auld Whitaker, passed away in 1999.
He is survived by his sister Genevieve McDonald (Steve) of Mt. Airy MD and his brother Ken Whitaker
(Joyce) of Fairfax VA as well as a nephew Travis McDonald and two nieces, Katy McDonald and Morgan
Whitaker, and one grandniece and one grandnephew. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends,
who cherished his warmth, passionate spirit, and kindness.  His family's celebrations will never be the
same without him, as his dobro provided the musical backdrop of our lives.
There will be a private funeral service and a celebration of his life with friends and fellow musicians
