Betty Jane Beyer was born August 22, 1927, the only child of George L. Beyer, Jr. and Hilda M. (Delcher) Beyer of Baltimore. They lived on Union Square in West Baltimore, where George operated a funeral parlor. Betty graduated from Western High School and Goucher College, and worked for some time at the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
In 1957, Betty married the Rev. Harold A. Ammons; they both grew up attending Union Square Methodist Church. From then until his retirement in 1990, she lived the life of a Methodist pastor's spouse; moving to a new place every few years, but a steady helpmate to him in his work, an engaged member in the work and life of the churches they served, and a devoted and loving mother to their two sons. For a number of years, she also worked as an assistant at the Lovely Lane Museum and Archives in Baltimore.
After her husband's retirement, they settled in Arbutus, Maryland; joining and helping the work of Violetville United Methodist Church, which had been one of his previous appointments. In later years, as his health failed, she continued to support and care for him until his death in 2011.
Worsening arthritis and hearing loss increasingly forced her to stay at home, and a fall and broken hip caused her ultimately to enter St. Elizabeth's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she remained until she passed peacefully away on the morning of June 8, 2023, aged 95 years.
While she had no siblings, she had a number of cousins just as close, and greatly enjoyed getting together with them and their families whenever possible. She and her husband also had a close circle of friends from their younger days at Union Square Church, and regularly joined them for get-togethers.
As long as her health permitted, Betty enjoyed reading, watching the Orioles games on TV (as well as "Jeopardy"), doing crossword puzzles, and cross stitching.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard B. Ammons of Arbutus, and Phillip L. Ammons of Norwich, Conn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the United Methodist Historical Society of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, or Violetville United Methodist Church.

The family will receive guests on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the HUBBARD FUNERAL HOME, INC., 4107 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 PM. Interment is private.
